1911 Contestant's Badge
Written by Robert A. Doto, Archivist
We have been fortunate enough to acquire a contestant’s badge (pictured left) from the 1911 U.S. Amateur hosted by Apawamis and won by Harold Hilton. This is the only 1911 U.S. Amateur contestant’s badge known to exist. Even though the U.S. Amateur started in 1895, only two contestants’ badges are believed to be in existence for U.S. Amateur Championships prior to the 1920 event. Very few pieces of memorabilia exist from Harold Hilton’s seven major championships. This badge was issued to A.C. Travis of the Denver Country Club. It came home to Apawamis on April 7, 2018, and will be displayed next to the Havemeyer Trophy. The Club and a group of members (“Archives Angels”) funded the purchase of the badge.
