Apawamis plays over typically rugged Westchester terrain, and demands accuracy off the tee. However, the challenge lies in the small greens, which are fast and slick, demanding defensive approach shots to specific target areas below the cup. Ben Hogan once called Apawamis “the toughest short golf course I have ever played.”
In 2017, The Apawamis Club worked with renowned golf course architect Keith Foster to enhance the golfing experience. During the project, greens were expanded to obtain additional hole locations, fairways were enlarged to their original perimeters, and all bunkers were rebuilt in a fashion compatible with turn of the century designs. The goal of the project was to present the greatest golf course possible, while adhering to the history and character of the Club. The ultimate result is a more playable, more enjoyable, enhanced golfing experience.
