  • Founded June 25, 1890, as a social organization by a group of 40 Rye gentlemen. 

  • The name Apawamis comes from two Native American words – “appoqua” meaning “to cover” and “mis” meaning the “trunk of a tree;" together Apawamis means “covering tree.”

  • Was the first chartered club in New York state; second golf club in Westchester; and one of the first twenty golf clubs in the country along with Shinnecock, The Saint Andrews Golf Club, Newport Country Club and The Tuxedo Club.

  • An 18-hole golf course designed by Willie Dunn, famed Scottish architect of Shinnecock Hills. Course yardage is 6741, rating 73.1 and a 141 slope. Golf facilities include practice putting green, driving range and state-of-the-art indoor Golf Performance Center with seasoned golf professional and staff.

  • Racquets facilities include seven tennis, seven squash and three paddle courts; each of the racquets programs is led by esteemed teaching professionals.

  • State-of-the-art Athletic Fitness Center with on-call personal trainers and weekly cardio and yoga classes.

  • Outdoor main pool is L-shaped 75 ft. long by 30 ft. wide with a diving well and dedicated lap lanes; fenced-in zero-point entry kiddie pool and fully staffed lifeguard team for safety and swim lessons; fully staffed snack bar and poolside service.

  • Annual summer Junior Sports Program for children 1st grade to 6th grade with instruction in swimming, squash, tennis and golf.

  • Grand Ballroom for special events and Club celebrations plus four well-appointed dining rooms, two bar lounges and private wine room with personal wine storage available for members. 

  • Popular annual Club parties include the Memorial Day Picnic, Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration, Labor Day Summer’s End Soiree, Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Ball and New Year’s Eve Gala.
